Photo Tips

Altering Images

Cottagecam takes a large number of photos whenever we shoot a site. Due to the large number of photos taken during our photo shoots, we cannot check the photo quality of every picture while in flight.

This means that some photos may not have the ideal color balance, and many contain multiple properties.

Fortunately, digital photos can often be corrected and improved using software tools that are available in all electronics and software stores. Using these tools, problems like undesired content and color issues can easily be fixed or dramatically improved. A few examples are provided below.

Removing Content (Cropping)

In figure 1 below, lets assume we wish to remove the properties on the left and right-hand sides of the photo:

Figure 1 - Not Cropped.

Using the "Cropping" tool in any digital image software, we can eliminate any outer sections of the photo we do not want. Figure 2 shows the photo with the area removed.

Figure 2 - Cropped.

Because Cottagecam provides you with high resolution versions of the photos, you can easily remove sections of the photo without a major loss of resolution (number of pixels).

Keep in mind though, that the more content you remove, the less you will be able to print the photo in large sizes, as you are effectively reducing the picture's resolution when cropping an image.

Always keep a backup of your original file and experiment with a copy of your photo file.

Altering the Color Levels of an Image

Sometimes an image appears slightly "washed out", often due to non-ideal exposure levels or lighting. This can also be altered in most software packages, as illustrated below in figures 3 and 4.

Again, always keep a backup of your original photo file and experiment with a copy.

Printing Images Using Online Services

In addition to simply printing an image on your own printer using special photo paper, you may bring your digital photo on a CD or send it by e-mail to a photo printing service. You simply need to specify the size of photo you would like printed and they do the rest. Cottagecam photos can be enlarged up to a size of 16 by 20 inches with no significant loss of quality.
